Building your Own Custom Gift Baskets

Creating your own custom gift baskets can be a fun and entertaining hobby. The baskets can be given to friends, relatives or anyone that you know- and they can be a less expensive way to give a unique gift as well. All it takes to put together the ultimate gift basket is a little creativity and a few basic materials.

To start putting together your own gift baskets, you will need to gather the basic supplies. First, you will need the baskets that you will use to put the gifts in. You can find these baskets nearly anywhere but a good place to start would be at your local hobby or craft store. The baskets come in several sizes from very small to extra-large or oversized. You should get a few of each size if you intend on making several baskets. The baskets will also come in a variety of materials like wicker, twine or nylon and they will range in styles and designs too. The nicer the material and design, the more costly the basket will be. Your preference and budget should determine your choices in design and material.

Next, you are going to need a filling to put around the items in the basket. Some good filling options include colored tissue paper, confetti or straw, though you can use anything that will take up the extra space and look nice. Additionally, you will want to buy a wrapping paper and ribbons to close your gift basket with. The wrapping paper is always going to be clear with a gift basket so that the contents inside are visible. You can also buy colored paper that is see-through as well. Make sure the wrapping paper sheets are large enough to cover the basket completely. The ribbons can be skinny, thick, curled or straight according to your preference.

Finally, you are going to choose what you will put inside your baskets. Making general gift baskets that can be given to anyone can be done by purchasing non-specific or non-personal items like fruit or other food/drink items, lotions, games and even gift cards. If you want to keep the cost low, buy a variety of smaller, cheaper items that you can use to fill up the basket. For a more costly basket, add more filling around the fewer, more expensive items.

Once you have all of your materials, then you can put your baskets together. Start by putting a small layer of filling on the bottom of the basket then add your items. You should add more filling as needed. Be sure to fill the basket nicely and don't leave any empty spaces. Once everything is in place, then you can use the wrapping paper to cover the basket. Bunch the paper at the top and use the ribbon to tie it shut. Now your basket is ready to give to someone special.
