Fish Of Ohio

In the United States, there are many states in which a person may need a fishing license in order to carry out fishing activities. The same applies for the state of Ohio. However, there are two days on which any resident of Ohio can carry out fishing activities whether with or without a license. These are the 7th and 8th day of May. If you live in Ohio and are new to fishing, these two days are great to try fishing. But what are the fish species that can be caught in Ohio waters.

Let us check out some of the fish of Ohio. In 2005, a group of University students collected a number of fish from the waters of Ohio. Here is a brief report on the type of fish that can be caught depending on the location in Ohio.

If you are looking to fish in Central Ohio, one of the popular species that be caught here includes the Channel catfish. Fishing can be done with a shrimp bait on the bottom and cut shad. Along the cover of the Buckeye Lake, you can catch large mouth bass and hybrid striped bass.

If you are fishing at the Licking River in Central Ohio, you can catch a range of fish including channel catfish, flathead catfish, smallmouth bass and carp. Northwest Ohio has a number of rivers and reservoirs and therefore the fishing opportunity is further increased.

On the Blanchard River, the water is usually muddy and the temperature is about 80 degrees. Small mouth bass are quite common in this river.

Channel catfish are common in the rivers of Scioto where the water is muddy and temperatures reach 80 degrees.

Bluegills are common along the Ottawa reservoir and you have the opportunity to catch the yellow perch along the Leipsic River. Bluegills and the yellow perch fish are two varieties of fish which thrive in clear waters.  These can be caught by fishing worms or casting wax worms.

The Mosquito Lake and the Portage Lake are two lakes in Northeast Ohio where you will find some of the common varieties of fish of Ohio. Along the Mosquito Lake, you can catch largemouth bass with spinner baits, walleyes and crappies.

Catfish and bass are common fish in Portage Lakes. Fish that can be found in lakes and rivers of Southwest Ohio include saugeye, bluegills, catfish, largemouth bass, crappies and channel cats. Catfish in Southwest Ohio are best caught with cut shad, chicken liver and shrimp baits.
